My review:I love reading this kind of book. The length of the novellas are perfect for reading on a cozy afternoon. And there's not one, but three in this collection. Each one centered around a midwinter's ball. Once again perfect for wrapping yourself in a cozy blanket and enjoying. I liked that each of these was a distinct and different story, that's what you'd expect when reading something written by three different authors, I guess, but I still liked it nonetheless. And the authors that have written this one are amazing too, some of my very favorites!
In Heidi Ashworth's Much Ado About Dancing, I liked Analisa. She has known for a long time that Lord Northrup would eventually be the man she would marry. But she didn't plan to have to go through three different seasons on her own and be considered an old maid by the third one. And it really doesn't help that Lord Northrup apparently warned every eligible bachelor not to even dance with Analisa. It's no wonder that after the end of three seasons she would have given up on Lord Northrup, who she remembers as kind of an annoying boy anyway and just want to get married. But what happens when he finally shows up and Analisa meets the man that she has decided she's ready to move on from. Such a cute story. I loved how Analisa gets herself into little situations that she will have to work hard later to get out of!
Annette Lyon's Sweeter Than Any Dream finds us with Olivia. She is a spinster, not by her choice, but by the choice of her mother and her aunt who have kept her closeted away from society. They both seem to be unkind and demeaning to her and she has taken to dreaming away her hours with them about a man who would be willing to overlook her spinsterhood and marry her anyway. Her younger brother and his wife are planning to come for a visit and Olivia is unsure how they will be treated by her mother and aunt. I loved the way that Olivia's brother and his wife get her out of the house for the ball. I might have laughed a little bit at the misfortune of the mother. And of course, Olivia meets a perfectly splendid man at the ball. But is there any chance that Olivia will be able to marry and change her family situation?
An Invitation to Dance by Michele Paige Holmes' Lady Ella was a very fun character as well. She's perfectly happy to keep to herself on the family estate with only her horses and servants for company. But one day she is whisked away to London for her own season by Alex Darling. A man she doesn't know, but who knew her fiance who has been dead for years. He has a letter written by her fiance, but does he really, and is her fiance really alive somewhere? I really liked this one. Ella is a sweet character, who never really considers herself or her own wants. I really enjoyed the ending of this one, there was a surprise that I wasn't planning on.
