Just Desserts

I'll be taking the rest of the week off to spend time with my family, hope you all have a Happy New Year!

About the book: Quinn spends all her time managing D'Angelo's Bakery - so much time, in fact, that she rarely does anything else. When things get tough for the bakery's owner and she's needed more than ever, dreams of romance and a family of her own fly out the window - but then along comes someone who shows her just how sweet life can be.

My review: I really loved reading this book! I love Quinn, I love how dedicated she is to her job. I love how she went out of her way to help her boss and his wife. You can tell that she truly cares for Mr. D'Angelo and wants the best for him and Maggie. I loved how she and Jonah could never get it right, one or the other of them was always either being mean or offended. But I love that Jonah didn't let Quinn push him away. I am really loving this whole Main Street Merchant series. You get to know individual character…

Blog Tour - Pierced by Love

About the book: Noelle Jensen doesn’t want to like Pierce Logan. After her boyfriend breaks up with her for her sister, Noelle is done with love. Plus Pierce Logan has commitment issues because of his parents’ divorce and a strained relationship with his dad. But as Pierce and Noelle inadvertently help each other to open up their hearts, they also rediscover the importance of family and love.

My review: This is a cute story. I liked Noelle, I thought that both she and Pierce were well written characters. I didn't like Noelle's sister, Melody, the stinking boyfriend thief, especially where Noelle had been hurt before. I really didn't like the boyfriend, Chase, the way that he put Noelle down and made her feel as though she wasn't as good as anyone else, why would she want to marry him anyway? But, I'm not really supposed to like either of them anyway, so they were really well written too. The plot was good, but there were a few places in the beginning where the paren…

Sam's Christmas Wish

I hope that you all have a wonderful Christmas! I'll be spending time with my family for the next couple of days and hope that you do the same.

About the book: "We don't need no charity," insists Big Sam Edwards. It's bad enough to have lost his job a few weeks before Christmas; the thought of "do-gooders" meddling in his business is more than he can bear. "I'll be watching if anybody comes around trying to leave anything at the door!" he warns.

But the mystery of a pile of gifts left anonymously, without any tracks in the snow, works a change in Sam's heart. The spirit of Christmas fills his home with joy.

Over the years, Sam becomes one of the most generous men in town. Yet his fondest wish goes unrealized: "I wish I could do something good and do it in secret so nobody would ever know."

And then one Christmas, he gets his chance—his secret act is even more gratifying than he ever could have imagined.

My review: I loved the pr…

Remake

About the book: A future without family.

Nine is the ninth female born in her batch of ten females and ten males. By design, her life in Freedom Province is without complications or consequences. However, such freedom comes with a price. The Prime Maker is determined to keep that price a secret from the new batches of citizens that are born, nurtured, and raised androgynously.

But Nine isn't like every other batcher. She harbors indecision and worries about her upcoming Remake Day—her seventeenth birthday, the age when batchers fly to the Remake facility and have the freedom to choose and what they'll be.

When Nine discovers the truth about life outside of Freedom Province, including the secret plan of the Prime Maker, she is pulled between two worlds and two lives. Her decisions will test her courage, her heart, and her beliefs. Who can she trust? Who does she love? And most importantly, who will decide to be?

My review: Wow, I'm thrilled to be able to tell you about this boo…

Blog Tour - Rough Around the Edges Meets Refined

Blog Tour Schedule

RoughAround the Edges Meets Refined (Meet Your Match #2) by Rachael Anderson For Noah Mackie, life is finally back on track. He has a great support system, a promised promotion is on its way, and he's finally getting the hang of this single father thing. But when the job falls through and his neighbor's matchmaking efforts become more aggressive, Noah is in for yet another unwanted detour. With his career and two spirited daughters to worry about, he doesn't have time for dating—especially not someone like Cassie Ellis, his girls' beautiful and sophisticated dance instructor, who is about as open and approachable as a brick wall. Rough around the Edges Meets Refined is about two people who think they know exactly what they want but who have no idea what they really need. It's about learning that people aren't always what they seem and that sometimes life’s detours take you exactly where you need to go.

My review: It's one of our family's favorite traditions to watch these Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square program's every year. Each are beautiful and bring the spirit of Christmas into your home. I loved this year's DVD! Deborah Voigt has an amazing voice and she was really fun to watch. John Rhys-Davies was really fun t…

Sleeping Beauty and the Beast

About the book: Trapped in a cursed sleep, the only experiences Princess Eglantine has are the ones in her dreams. There she meets Prince Henry of Fallund, a neighboring kingdom on the brink of war.

Meanwhile, Prince Henry's brother Duncan discovers a vicious beast imprisoned for murder. Captivated by her, he works to free her from both the prison bars she's locked behind and the ones surrounding her heart and mind. Sleeping Beauty and the Beast reinvents and seamlessly intertwines the classic fairy tales Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast.

My review: I love Melissa Lemon's fairy-tale re-tellings. I love that you know any time you pick up one of her books that you are going to get a great, clean story that you won't want to put down. This book is all of that and more! I loved the way that she's woven two fairy-tales together, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. The way she does this is really clever. The book is about two brothers, both princes and two w…

Fairy Tale Christmas

About the book: Santa Claus has been kidnapped!

Behind the plot are an evil queen, a wicked stepmother, a sorceress, a beanstalk giant, and, of course, the mischievous Rumpelstiltskin. They have a plan that will erase the term "Happily Ever After" from our storybooks forever.

But it's nearly Christmas Eve, and time is running out. Can Santa and the fairy-tale heroes save the day and bring Christmas to all the children of the world? Will anyone have a "Happily Ever After" again?

Fairy Tale Christmas reminds us all that there is good in everyone and that the magic of Christmas can soften any heart.

My review: This book is really a fun one! I loved the whole premise. A bunch of the bad guys from fairy tales, the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk, the evil step-mother from Cinderella, Rumplestiltskin, and Snow White's mom have gotten together with the perfect plan to fix the endings of their fairy tales. You see, every time a child reads the fairy tales these villa…

About the book: Make Mondays the best night of the week! With a full year of easy family nights that correlate directly with the 2015 Primary theme, this book is the perfect solution for busy families everywhere. For each week you’ll find a complete lesson written for you, plus songs, scriptures, ideas for treats, and activity options for younger and older children.

My review: This book is an awesome Family Home Evening resource. I love the way that it is set up with 3-4 ideas per month. That way if you have an activity planned where you won't be having a lesson, there's no stress on missing one. I love that these lessons include an activity for both older and younger children so no one feels left out. There are challenges and games for each lesson as well. I also love that included with each lesson is a list of Hymns, or songs from the Children's Songbook as well as scriptures that coordinate, such a help for last minute planning! And I really love that this will coordinat…

Blog Tour - An Uncommon Blue

About the book: In TĂ©lesphore, the glowing color of a person’s palm determines their place in society, and touching hands with another mixes the colors permanently. When sixteen-year-old Bruno accidentally kills a royal soldier, he goes from favored to fugitive. Now Bruno's only chance at survival is to become someone else. That means a haircut, a change of wardrobe, and most important, getting rid of his once cherished Blue. Now he’s visiting parts of town he never knew existed, and making friends with people he would've crossed the street to avoid only weeks ago. At the last minute, Bruno’s parents arrange a deal to clear his name and get his life back. All Bruno has to do is abandon those in the Red slums that look to him as a leader and let an innocent Green boy die in his place.

My review: This book was a bit confusing for me at first. The first chapter starts and seems to be very contemporary, and then it starts talking about the fire in people's hands. I was able to…

A Generation Rising

About the book: The strongest steel is forged in the hottest flames. From master storyteller Gerald N. Lund comes a new blockbuster series chronicling the lives of two families who will face some of the most turbulent times in history as they are tried to their very cores. Will they be tempered and strengthened by the hammering blows, will they bend to the point of breaking, or will they completely shatter?

As volume one begins, life could not be more promising for the Eckhardts. They finally have a son, Hans, the male heir they have longed for and a child of such brilliance and promise that his success seems certain. But as youthful Hans’s ambition takes him away from his family and their small Bavarian village, the winds of unrest in Europe are about to erupt into the greatest war the world has ever known.

Kicking off a story that will cross generations—and continents—the Eckhardts must brace themselves to weather the storms and turmoil that lie ahead. Only through sheer determination…

Blog Tour - Free Bread Girl

About the book: Mattie’s smart and she’s in line for a college scholarship, but she’s not exactly the most popular person in school. When the hot and hunky guys at the women’s convention bread booth give out free samples to all the cutest, trendiest girls in the room, they overlook her. It’s just proof that she’s not worth their attention—she’s not a free bread girl.
What she really wants is to date Travis Banks, her high school’s soccer king. But he just can’t see past her clumsiness and frizzy hair to the real Mattie underneath, and sometimes, she can’t either. What’s it going to take for Mattie to find the free bread girl within?

My review: I really enjoyed this book. I found traces of my high school self within Mattie. I loved that she felt like she could be a real person that you know. I loved that it felt that I had been somehow sent back to my high school years. I loved how Mattie thought that she knew exactly what she wanted; only to find out, in the end, that she really didn…

Death's Academy

About the book: You see that chipmunk over there? I’ve got to make sure it’s dead in less than three minutes. Don’t make that face—it’s my job.

Midnight Smith has a problem. He’s a hoodie. Well, almost. He has to go through Death’s Academy so he can learn how to snuff out shorties (humans, like you and your friends) and outsmart those pesky halos. Then he’ll get his shroud and calling and become a full-fledged Grim Reaper. But to get into Death’s Academy, there’s a real killer exam . . . and Midnight stinks at exams.

What he doesn’t know is that the exam is the least of his worries. When the hoodies and halos go on their yearly retreat, the time is ripe for an old enemy—the diabolical Unicorns—to strike. That leaves Midnight and his friends the only ones to stop the attack . . . and this is something he just  can’t  fail at.

Death's Academy turns convention on its head. Root for the “bad guy” in this delicious twist on good versus evil.

About the book: Sophie Kendrick's father has gone missing in the jungles of Costa Rica. Desperate for answers to his whereabouts, she decides to search for him herself. She hires Jack Mathison to guide her through the jungle, but the two of them seem to be at odds from the moment they meet. Sophie finds Jack conceited, sarcastic, and worse, very good-looking. He is totally not her type, so how could she possibly be attracted to him? Likewise, Jack can't wait to be rid of Sophie and her optimistic outlook. Seriously, how could someone be that nice? Jack isn't looking for a relationship, and finds the electrifying chemistry between the two of them completely annoying. His job is to lead Sophie to a remote village deep inside the rainforest- her fathers last known location. Still, the jungle is a dangerous place and Jack does everything in his power to protect Sophie, but who will protect his heart?

My Review: Wow, this book is a wild ride! I loved Sophie, she's a super sm…

Blog Tour - Being West is Best

About the book: Twelve-year-old BFFs, Ginnie West and Tillie Taylor, are matchmaking geniuses. Together, they maneuvered Ginnie’s widower-dad into proposing to Tillie’s divorcee-mom. Sweet! Certain they are well on their way to sisterhood, each girl is floored when Tillie’s lousy-excuse-for-a-father puts in an appearance after a six year absence. Too bad “lousy dad repellant” doesn’t come in a can. Even though Tillie’s dad has sobered up and is determined to make amends, Tillie would rather he just disappear again. If he stays, “Operation: Secret Sisters” may need to be renamed “Operation: Not Gonna Happen.”

If that’s not bad enough, the biggest bully in seventh grade comes over often and wishes he could call the West’s farmhouse “home.” When the bully’s abusive dad shows up as well, Ginnie thinks it’s time to change her family’s motto from “When you’re here, you’re family” to “There’s no more room at the West’s.”

Book snippet: Calliope shied backward.
“So do we.” Ginnie stroked her hor…
