Huber Hill, his sister Hannah, and best friend Scott are glad to be home after their trip to Spain, but they are returning home with heavy hearts. They return to their empty homes, because the Brotherhood of Coronado have kidnapped their parents. They know they must find them quickly, it could be too late. They head first to Huber's house, hoping against hope that all will be well there and they can find a clue to lead them to their parents, but unfortunately they encounter one of the kings of the Brotherhood of Coronado, and he almost captures them. But thanks to their friend, Eagle Claw, the three friends are able to escape and head to New Mexico to find their new friends Alejandro and Yesenia. There's only one little problem, none of them are supposed to be driving, they're not old enough, so when Scott gets caught by the police the three teenagers make a run for it. They find themselves as hitchhikers aboard the freight train to Santa Fe. Where they will find a long lost diary explaining how to get to Cibola and find the golden staff. They know that it's imperative to get there before the Brotherhood of Coronado and also Juan Salazar, their old nemesis. But will they be able to do so?
This book is action packed. I love that it's written for pre-teens and teens, but there's plenty to recommend it to adults too! The characters in these books are fun and you really get to know Huber, Hannah, Scott and even Juan Salazar. There is tons of action and adventure, you never know what's going to be around the corner or how everything is going to work out for the kids and their rivals. There was more than one time I was surprised as to what happened next. I'm kind of sad that this is the final adventure of this series, but grateful for the journey. I did think that the ending wrapped everything in the series up, I wasn't disappointed.
