Take My Heart by Marie Higgins

Mercedes Maxwell’s sister’s last wish was for Mercedes to find evidence against Kat’s husband, William Braxton, and have him hung as a traitor to the crown. Mercedes isn’t naïve when it comes to capturing traitors, because her own deceased husband had once been an agent for the King when they lived in England.

When she meets William Braxton for the first time, all is not as it seems. Portraying her twin, Mercedes knows this is the only way to get close enough to William to discover his secrets. What she finds along the way are little surprises she hadn’t counted on, especially when she begins to give her heart to a man who may be a spy against the crown.

My Review:

Mercedes Maxwell is a young women who grew up in England, but now lives in colonial America. There are traitors everywhere, her late husband was a man who turned them in to the king for money. Her father had gone insane and ended up dying and now it seems as though her identical twin sister is suffering the same fate. When she talks to her sister, Kat, Kat tells her about her terrible husband William Braxton. Mercedes feels terrible leaving her sister in the insane asylum where she's been committed, but she really has no choice, Mercedes must figure out a way to get her released before William Braxton finds out about her being committed. Unfortunately, Kat kills herself before Mercedes can have her released. Knowing that there will be bills that will be sent to Kat's husband for her stay in the asylum and burial, Mercedes heads for her sister's home in Philadelphia. Mercedes and Kat must have looked more alike than Mercedes remembers because all of the people that she runs into in Philadelphia believe that Mercedes is Kat, including the handsome William Braxton. Mercedes is quite poisoned against him because of what Kat had told her, but William doesn't seem to be quite as hard-hearted and cruel as she had said. Kat, however, had obviously not been as modest and scrupled as Mercedes would have liked, Mercedes finds herself being accosted by all kinds of men, who claim that she had been very good "friends" with them. And her clothes, not a modest dress among them. It's up to Mercedes to get to the bottom of this, and she'll just have to let William believe that she is Kat, but a changed Kat for now. But will this decision cost Mercedes everything, her life and the love that she begins to gain for William and his two small children?

I was sucked into this story from the very first page. I really liked Mercedes, and I really liked William and his young family. I liked the way that Mercedes worked at winning him over, just by showing that she cared for him, even though he thought that she was her sister and hated him. I did think that there was plenty of romance in this book and maybe a bit more sexual innuendo than I am really comfortable with. However, the romance is clean and there is plenty of mystery. I was really surprised with the twist in the ending. I am looking forward to reading the second book in the series!
