Athena

Athena is happy with her life the way that it is. She's the editor of her own magazine, Newport Travel, she has a boyfriend, sort of...they go on dates when he's in between assignments for her magazine. Her mom is constantly nagging her to get married to a nice Greek boy, and her dad's Alzheimer's is making it so he doesn't even remember her name. Things take a turn for the worse for Athena, when her boyfriend Karl comes back into town and starts pushing for way more commitment that Athena is ready for. When she refuses, by her silence, she knows that they are over, but his parting shot about her never reading books bothers her. It bothers her so much, that she spontaneously goes into a used bookstore on her morning run the very next day. She feels that she's a mess from working out, but the owner, Grey, never says a thing about that. He does offer her a free first edition book if she'll go to this book club, mainly to get Ruby, the woman with the book club off his back about recommending it. Athena's not sure it's a great idea, but she makes the call anyway and does decide to attend the club. It's a good thing, because Athena is going to have some challenges coming her way and she needs some good friends to support her and help her get through them.

This is the fourth installment of the Newport Ladies Book Club. I love these books. I would have to say this one is my favorite so far. I love Athena's perspective. It's kind of neat how I had formed a preconception of Athena from the other books, but when I see things from her perspective, it changed what I thought of her. I love the way that each of these books about different women was written by a different author, it makes each of the stories feel as individual as the individual women are. I like the way that it teaches us not to judge each other, because, even if we do know some one pretty well, we still don't know what it's like to be them and go through their challenges. I also really like that it doesn't matter what order you read these in. They are all written about the same time period, so you can start with Olivia, Daisy, Paige or Athena and you won't miss anything at all.

I was able to borrow this book from my local library, but you can buy it at Amazon, Deseret Book, or most anyplace that you buy books.
