Heaven is Here

Stephanie Nielson and her husband were involved in a horrific airplane crash in Arizona in August of 2008. They were at the time the parents of 4 young children. Up to the plane crash they had lived fairly normal lives, doing normal things, falling in love, getting married, raising their young family, jobs and Christian Nielson learning to fly an airplane. The day of the crash, Christian and Stephanie, along with the pilot that had taught Christian to fly, were in an airplane on their way back from a pleasure trip to Christian's family's ranch when as they took off after filling up with gas, something went terribly wrong. The airplane crash was a fiery mess, and Stephanie woke up in the backseat of the plane, uncertain of how to unbuckle her own seatbelt and get herself out of the plane. She also had no idea where her husband or the other pilot was. She has a few memories of being in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, but beyond that, she remembers nothing until she wok…

Through My Eyes

Ruby Bridges was a six year old girl in 1960 when the idea of de-segregation was announced in New Orleans. That year a judge decided that the schools should be integrated, so someone came up with a test for all the black kids to take, hoping that none would pass and they wouldn't need to admit any black children into the white schools. About 5 kids passed, including Ruby. 4 of the kids lived in the boundaries of one school, but Ruby was the only black child living in the boundaries of her school. On her first day of school in her new school, Ruby and her mother were escorted to school by US Marshals, but the school principal really wanted nothing to do with a black child in her school, so they were made to sit in the principal's office the entire school day without anyone even saying anything to them. Soon though, Ruby would have a teacher that she would grow to love, Mrs. Henry, and Ruby would learn that even though they were a different color, they could learn to get along a…

The Guardians of the Hidden Scepter

Amber is a young girl, she goes to a private school. Her favorite subject is archaeology and her favorite teacher is Ms. Holcomb, but every one just calls her Dorothy. Dorothy takes Amber on a top secret mission into the local museum in the middle of the night and they very nearly get caught by the security guards. That's a pretty amazing experience for Amber, but it's kind of ruined by Dorothy announcing to her that she's got to go on a top secret trip, leaving immediately. She's not even going to escort Amber back to school, but she gives Amber a gift first, a beautiful necklace with an amazing blue stone on it. A few weeks later, Amber and her friends are slogging through their end of the year finals, when they receive a letter from Dorothy saying that she's not coming back to school that year. This letter seems odd to Amber because of some of the things that Dorothy says, and she and her friends, Joe, Lisa, and Trendon soon determine that it's a coded messa…

The Lemonade War

Evan Treski is going into the 4th grade in just a few days, that would be just fine, except for the fact that his younger sister, Jessie, is skipping the 3rd grade and going into the 4th as well. In. The. Same. Class. Not really an awesome situation for any 4th grader and Evan doesn't really see himself as school smart. So Evan is mad at Jessie and he's trying to avoid her for the last few days before the new school year starts, which isn't really working that well. Evan decides that he needs to get out of the house and...what...sell some lemonade, but not with Jessie, with another boy. Jessie is furious that Evan doesn't want to sell lemonade with her, they always sell lemonade together, and she's not at all sure why he seems to be mad at her all of a sudden. Jessie decides that she needs to sell lemonade too, with a 4th grade girl, that will show Evan. Just like that, the contest is on. Who can sell the most lemonade and make the most money before school starts -…

The Wishing Garden

Mary Cranford is grown up now, but she's having vivid memories of hearing her parents fight as a child. That's mostly because she's recently moved back into her childhood home with her father. Her husband, Simon, and one of her twin daughters, Isabelle, were killed in a car accident. Mary is lucky to have her sweet daughter Adrienne still. Unfortunately Mary's father is very prejudiced against people with Latino backgrounds and Isabelle and Adrienne are both Latina, so he treats Adrienne very unkindly. This is hard for Mary to bear, so she tries very hard to keep Adrienne away from her grandfather and not to have to spend very much time with him herself. This is not to difficult because he is very sick and basically bound to his bed. Mary is concerned about her mother's garden. Her mother loved her garden, but since she died 4 years earlier, no one has cared for it and it's fallen into disrepair. Mary convinces her father that finding a gardener for her mother&…

Women of Strength

Blurb from the back of the book: The need for courageous, faithful women has never been greater than it is today. As we draw nearer to the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, we are faced with temptations on every side. But we can prevail as we gain true strength from living the gospel.

In Women of Strength, Tristi Pinkston shares inspiring stories, as well as insightful quotes from Church leaders, to demonstrate the power and influence of righteous women. This book invites women everywhere to deepen their relationship with the Savior, rely on the
guidance of the Holy Ghost, and learn what it really means to be strong.

This book is amazing! I love the way that Tristi writes and tells us women just how great we really are, even though Satan tries to tell us otherwise. I love her story at the beginning about the King protecting his castle and the symbolism of that throughout the book. This is a book that all women should read to learn just what we all need to do to become Women of Strength!

Pure

The Detonation marked the end of the world as everyone knew it. Marking those outside of the dome with whatever object happened to be near them and killing many others. Pressia, picking up her luggage at the airport with her mother was fused with her doll that she was holding, it's now part of her hand. Her mother didn't make it. Her grandfather, who was coming to pick them up has a fan in his throat, he knows that it will eventually kill him, but he had to live to care for Pressia. Partridge lives in the dome, but his mother was killed and he's never forgiven his father. He's now working on a way out of the dome, but he will never believe the world that he finds outside.

I have to say that I wanted to read this one, but I had a terrible time getting into the story. It's quite long (over 400 pages) and by the time I got to about 150 pages, I still wasn't into the story to the point that I cared about what happened to the characters. The language in the book als…

The Serpent's Shadow

Carter and Sadie Kane have been able to send Rick Riordan another sound recording of their adventures trying to save the world from Chaos and it's snake Apophis. They only have 3 days left before the promised end of the world. They've been spending their time looking for a certain scroll that contains a spell that they are hoping will help them, the only problem is that by the time they get to one, Chaos is there to destroy it, there's only one left in Texas. But just like the last several times, it's destroyed right before their eyes. Carter, Sadie and Zia must find a way to restore Ma'at to the universe before sunrise on the third day. Along the way it would be nice to have some of the gods on their side, so they'll have to work on that too. They have their work cut out for them, hopefully the teenagers will be able to pull it off, or it's the end of the world for all of the rest of us!

I have to say that I've enjoyed this series. I was pretty sad when…

Guest Post: Sonja Herbert

Today we have a guest post from Sonja Herbert, author of Carnival Girl.

My father raised his family in a tiny carnival, traveling the small towns in central Germany right after WWII, to keep his rapidly growing family fed.
I was the second child of six, all of us crammed into a small caravan which my father pulled with a tractor from town to town. I remember the devastation, both physical and spiritual, which the German people lived with after the war was over. Ruins and unexploded bombs littered the cities, and lost and orphaned children overwhelmed the orphanages. Food was hard to come by, and education was almost non-existent, especially for us carnival children, since we traveled from town to town every week or two.
My mother rejected religion and never taught her children about God. However, when I was eight, I had a vision and developed a strong desire to be in a church, to live in a house and to have God love and approve of me. I had to hide such feelings from my family, because …

Blog Tour: Carnival Girl

My blog is today's stop for Carnival Girl written by Sonja Herbert. This is the true story of Sonja and her family. Sonja's parents, Mutti and Vati, live in post-World War II Germany, they own a Carnival and travel Germany running it, with their five children. Times are not always easy for the family, there's heartache and misery, but there are also happy times. The family lives in a small caravan home that they pull from small town to small town. Life changes constantly for their family, but one thing remains the same for Sonja, her love for Jesus Christ and belief in a God, even though the rest of her family don't believe and even mock her for believing, Sonja always believes in God, prayer, and Jesus. When she meets some missionaries the year that she's 14, their teachings make perfect sense to Sonja and she knows that she wants to be baptized, but because she is so young, she must have her parents permission. Will her parents, who don't believe the way she …

Doe has been exiled by Lily's father the king, but she won't say what she did, it must have been bad, because not only was she exiled, she was exiled without her powers. Through His Eyes

Have you ever cleaned out a closet? Do you start just by taking one thing at a time and move it to it's proper place or do you empty the whole closet and put everything either back where it's been or in a new and different place? That is the idea behind this book by Virginia H Pearce, except we're not cleaning out closets here, we're cleaning out thoughts from our mind. Thoughts color our world and our emotions and make us think and do things in a certain way. Some of our thoughts are Truths, some are true and some are just plain not true. In this book we are taught how to examine our beliefs and determine just which are true and which are maybe not at all true.

I enjoyed this book. I was able to read it quite quickly and I discovered some things about myself while reading it. I think that I am going to have to read it again soon so that I can change the way that I see myself, and the way that I look at those around me too.

Betsy-Tacy

Betsy is so excited when a girl just her age moves in across the street. She can't wait to go meet her, but when she goes to meet her, the girl acts strange. She takes one look at Betsy and rushes into her house and locks the door. Betsy's unsure of what to think and tries to let the girl know that all she wanted was to know her name. But the little girl doesn't reply and Betsy heads home. Right then the little girl opens the door and yells one word, Tacy, but Betsy, having never heard that name before thinks that Tacy is calling her a name, she heads for home, feeling sad that that little girl will never be her friend. That small misunderstanding starts a story of Betsy and Tacy that will last for generations.

I had never heard of the Betsy-Tacy books before I read the last Mother Daughter Book Club book. I probably would never have heard of them, and I would be missing out on some amazing classic literature. I'm glad that I was able to find these books easily, I read…

Rocky Revada is a PI who lives in Logan, Utah, he's currently taken a much deserved and needed vacation in San Diego, California. But right in the middle of his amazing vacation he gets a phone call from his former boss, Glenn Gridley. Glenn is a man in need of a PI, or maybe a policeman. Glenn's championship roping horse is missing and he thinks that Rocky is just the man to find the horse and figure out who took him. Rocky, however, wants nothing to do with coming back from his vacation a week early. But after giving the matter some thought, decides that he should come home and take the case. Good thing too, because not only is Glenn's horse missing, his daughter, Shanice's, horse is also missing, both horses are worth an awful lot of money. Someone doesn't like that and Rocky starts to receive death threats,…

Funeral Potatoes

Sydney is your typical Utah wife and mom. She doesn't enjoy funerals, but she really loves funeral potatoes and there doesn't seem to be any shortage of funerals to make them for in her life. Sydney is the mom of four crazy kids and that keeps her plenty busy, but not too busy to pray for her brother Ted. Ted is the only one of her siblings not married, and also the only one of her siblings inactive in the LDS faith. So Syd feels lots of concern for him and makes sure to pray for him. She feels like he needs to develop a testimony, so she makes sure to pray for him to have specific trials, things like car accidents, but not to serious ones of course. The funny thing is that every time she prays for something specific to happen to Ted, it does, and he usually calls her to tell her about it. But will Sydney ever learn to stop meddling and simply allow Ted, and her children, to learn their own life lessons.

This book was pretty humorous. I loved all the zany situations that Sydney…

The Heirs of Southbridge

Clayton and his brother Travis were young boys when their mother died. Their grandfather, owner of the plantation Southbridge, where Clayton and Travis were born and lived for the first bit of their lives had never liked their father because he was a northerner. So when their mother died, grandfather wanted Clayton's dad, Gavin, to leave and to leave both Clayton and Travis with him. Gavin, of course, refuses to leave the boys, and instead he and the boys end up fleeing when grandfather goes into one of his drunken rages and tries to kill their mother's favorite horse. The three know they are being followed, so they travel mostly at night and try to stay hidden during the day, but that's not really a great life for young boys. As soon as he feels he's far enough away, Gavin tries to make a normal life for his two boys by going on cattle drives. He's saving every penny to buy their very own ranch, but unfortunately he dies before he's able to buy his own place a…
