The Horn of Moran

In the six months since Alex's last adventure he's been studying to be a Wizard by corresponding with Whalen Vankin, meeting with him would be preferable, but Whalen is currently on an adventure of his own. He's also been exploring his own dad's Magic Bag and trying to get to know him, even a little bit. One day, he receives a note from Whalen telling him that Silvan Bregnest, the leader of his last adventure is putting together a new group to go on another adventure. Whalen tells Alex that it's up to him, but that he thinks just maybe Alex would like to go on the adventure. Alex jumps at the suggestion, meeting Bregnest as suggested and signing on for a second adventure to find The Horn of Moran, a very important artifact for the known land of Alusia. Along the way Alex will get to see two friends get married, vanquish a bully in a comical way, outwit some goblins and make a host of new friends. All in adventure's name.

I was hoping that this second book was as…

Slathbog's Gold

Alex is having just a normal day. He's taken some time to think about his day as he's walking through town. He comes to a familiar bookshop on a familiar street, but suddenly everything is different. He notices in this familiar shop a sign that he's never seen there before. The sign says "Adventurers Wanted: Apply Within." Alex is musing on the strangeness of the message of the sign and happens to glance around at the empty street around him, when he looks back at the sign, it's changed color. He wonders if it's a special sign made to change color and enters the bookstore to either look at the sign or inquire of the clerk. What he finds is something surprising. The store inside is not the familiar bookstore that he was expecting, it's something far different. Through a funny misunderstanding, the man in the store, Mr. Clutter, takes an application from Alex to be an Adventurer and sets him up with an interview immediately for his first adventure. Alex…

Blog Tour - Countdown to Love

Book Summary: Abandoned at the altar, Kelly Grace Pickens finds herself left holding not only the bouquet but also the exorbitant bill for an A-list wedding. Pitted against silicon-enhanced supermodels in four-inch heels, Kelly feels confident that she will be among the first would-be fianc├ęs to be excused. Only, when the mysterious bachelor from New York City, Dillon Black, invites her to stay, Kelly finds herself thrust into the vortex of a game she doesn’t have the first idea how to play. Nursing her hopelessly broken heart while avoiding the foils of her fellow contestants, Kelly is oblivious to Dillon’s affections as she wades through hurt and betrayal to discover, in the end, that she has landed firmly on both feet.

The Chimney Sweep Charm

Baylee is excited for her dream job of being in a Handbell ringers choir at Dicken's village for the Christmas season. This is an amazing opportunity for her to do what she loves most, ring handbells and sing. It's also an amazing opportunity for her in a way that she doesn't even realize at first. The Village is protected by Chimney Sweeps, just like Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins and these are not only chimney sweeps, they are retired Navy Seals and they are hot! Baylee is soon swept off her feet (pun intended) by Justice, an amazing chimney sweep that falls quickly for her as well. Soon she's enjoying his company for dinner on all of their shared breaks, but what she doesn't realize is that he's an FBI agent, all the chimney sweeps are, out on the lookout for the Jack the Ripper copy cat that seems to have his sights set on the Dicken's Village and maybe the girls in the Handbell choir.

This book was short and sweet. I loved the story set in Dicken's V…

Caribbean Crossroads

Megan is a college graduate, but unlike most girls her age, she's not really looking for a man right now. She was dumped by a real jerk before this story starts, and you can feel her lack of trust toward the opposite sex as she interacts with the males around her. Her roommate, Jillian, keeps trying to get her to go out with new guys, and when things don't seem to be working that way, she decides to basically trick Megan into signing on as a performer on a cruise ship. It's the same cruise line that Jillian met her own boyfriend on, and Jillian will be there too. Megan is quite nervous about going, it really doesn't help that there is a guy there that keeps staring at her, and it really doesn't help that everywhere she goes on the ship that same guy, Bryant, appears to be there too. Megan can't figure out why he's always there, why her heart beats faster when he is there, or why she's always looking for him too. Is it possible that Bryant could be a goo…

Blog Tour - Choosing Charity

I'm excited to be today's stop for the Choosing Charity blog tour!

Kit Matthews Bridger is loving her life. She just recently got married to the love of her life, Adam Bridger, she's graduated and is working for a CPA. She's not sure that she's seeing her husband enough and she's still getting used to her parents being divorced. Things are pretty great all the way around and then one day she gets a letter in the mail from an attorney. She knows that nothing good ever comes from attorneys offices in the mail but reluctantly opens it to find a request from a woman claiming to be her biological mother to get DNA tested to see if they really are related. This is kind of exciting/scary for Kit, mainly because as a newborn she was thrown away by her biological mother. Kit has always wondered why and hardly dares to hope she might now find out the reason. She's tested and it's determined that she is the daughter of Alicia, who now wants to meet Kit. She knows t…

Having Hope

Kit Matthews is thrilled, her boyfriend Adam Bridger has just returned from his mission in California. Two years has never seemed longer! Just as they are getting acquainted and ready to move on with their lives together, Kit attends a meeting about a humanitarian effort in Romania and just knows that she is supposed to go. It will only be for three months, but Kit really doesn't want to go and leave Adam, especially when he just barely got home. She knows that she needs to go, and Adam and her parents are supportive, so Kit finds herself off to Romania with her friend Tara and a couple of other girls that they will work and room with. She's not sure why she's there, but her having been adopted by her parents helps when she works with orphans both at an orphanage and at a children's hospital. What Kit hadn't counted on though is falling in love with the children that she's been assigned to work with. When things change for the worse for her family at home Kit s…

Not a place that Kit has ever even wanted to visit! It ends up being kind of hard for Kit to make friends, every one seems to be shying away from her because she's a "non-member." Kit's not even sure what that means. But then she meets Janet one day at the mall, she had seen Janet before, they were even in a class together, but they hadn't spoken. Janet is a wonderful girl that everyone likes because she's so kind and loving. Janet takes Kit into her family and the whole family loves Kit likes she's one of their own, especially Janet's older brother Adam. Kit falls in love very quickly with Adam, but she soon discovers that he's going to be leaving for two years on a mission for his Church. Texting Through Time

Micah has "borrowed" his dad's phone. This is not just a phone though, it's an experimental time-travel phone. Micah is showing his sister Alicia the phone and how it works when-bam- they are sent to Brigham Young's boyhood home. It's Brigham's 11th birthday. While it's pretty neat to meat a prophet, before he becomes a prophet, it wasn't so neat when the phone didn't appear to be working anymore. Alicia and Micah are scared and it appears that they will be trapped in the past. The phone does allow them to travel to later events in Brigham's life and the kids are able to see many of the events of Church history that are very neat, still they just want to go home. Along the way they learn many lessons, most importantly that the Lord watches over all of his children. But will Micah and Alicia ever make it back home to their own time and family?

I found the premise of this story clever. How many books out there are there about a time traveling…

The Lost Stones

Ammon Rogers is a BYU student, he's returned from his second tour of duty in the middle east, and he's trying to make up for lost time. Ammon fell away from the LDS Church in his teenage years, much to the chagrin of his parents, so he's trying to learn all he can about the Church at BYU. This involves taking many religion classes, where he usually feels pretty stupid, because he doesn't know the answers. A common phrase he hears from his classmates is “Didn't you ever go to primary?” Ammon is also trying to study alternative fuel souces so that he will be able to help get rid of the big oil companies that seem to hold much of America's money in their grasp. As he's studying alternative fuel sources, however, he attracts the attention of The Accident Man, a man who causes “accidents” for those that seem to be a threat to big oil. This man has caused “accidents” for countless scientists and college students trying to come up with an alternative fuel source t…

The Savage Grace (The Dark Divine #3)

This is the third in the Dark Divine series. Grace and Daniel had been able to save Grace's brother Jude at the end of the last Dark Divine novel. This one starts out with Daniel stuck in his werewolf form as a white wolf. Grace is uncertain how to help him escape from this form and it's breaking her heart that he seems to be pulling away from her, even though she also fights the wolf that lives inside of her from the bite that Jude gave her. Jude is currently living in the basement of their father's church because he doesn't trust himself not to turn back to the wolf and fight against Grace and Daniel again. But there are problems coming. The whole town is on edge from the apparent wolf attacks that have been happening. One local grocer has even bought pure silver bullets and donated them to the cause. This is especially dangerous for Daniel, as every night he howls loudly enough for the whole town to hear and it's terrifying everyone. There also will be a challen…

The Only Way to Paradise

MacKenzie, Roxie, Sara and Georgia have dubbed themselves "The Crazy Ladies of Oakwood." This because they are all in a group therapy session together, but none of them is really quite sure why any of the others are there. One day, fed up with their therapist and sure she has no idea what any of them need, they decide to blow off their session in favor of a movie instead. As they are watching a romantic movie about Italy, they all wonder "If Italy is so wonderful, what are we doing in Ohio?" This seemingly random thought has Georgia announcing that she wants to fly them all to Italy so that they can experience it themselves. It takes some persuasion to get some of them to agree to go, but they all go, and so do their secrets and their fears. Will the wonderfulness of Florence, Italy be able to cure them forever of their secret problems and allow them to just be themselves?

I'm not quite sure what to say about this one. I thought that the premise of the story sou…

Samantha Skyler is a BYU coed. She's just like any other BYU coed, she goes to all the singles events, dates the boys that ask her out, hangs out quite a bit with the boys that live in her ward. She has some amazing roommates, but she's ready to move on with her life. Things don't seem to be working out that way though. The boy that she's been dating just told her that it's a better idea to be "friends" than to date. Unfortunately he's the dad of her family home evening group and that means that she'll see him at least once a week for a while longer and she'll have to see him flirt with all of her FHE sisters. FHE is just ending when Harrison Bean shows up at their apartment. He tells the roommates that he will be able to get them all engaged by the end of the semester, only a month away if they will all agree to follow his plan. It takes some convincing, but soon the roommates, Stephanie, Ashley, Emma and Brooke agree to follow his advice. Wh…

It's 1850 in England, the Chandler family are getting ready to embark on their new life as immigrants, but Henry Chandler's employers don't know that. Henry has worked for the Cunard shipping line for quite a while and one of the benefits is passage on the ships for Henry and his wife and a discount for their children. They have decided that they will take a "vacation" by booking the free and discounted passage to America, but they won't be coming back. As they are boarding the ship, they see the captain in a heated argument with a well dressed young lady. Henry's wife, Alexandra, determines that the young lady would like to engage passage on the steamship, but the captain is refusing, because she doesn't have anyone to escort her. The family decides that they can vouch for the young lady and protect her on their voyage across the ocean and the young lady, Gloria, is allowed to book passage. She boards with the family, after telling Henry of her troub…

Insurgent

This book starts off right where Divergent ended. Tris and Tobias have just finished shutting down the simulation and escaped from Dauntless headquarters, but now they are on the run. They must stay one step ahead of Erudite in order to stay alive. They start out hiding in Amity headquarters, but the rules there are very strict. There is to be no fighting, and both Tris and Tobias know that they really aren't going to be able to not fight, especially with Peter there. Tris catches Peter in her room, he's stealing the hard drive that she's kept the info from the simulation on, it also has video of her father being shot. Tris has had a hard time with her parent's deaths so close together and right in front of her, so this it's devastating for her when Peter steals the hard drive. So much so that she hauls off and hits him...hard. She and Tobias know that that's pretty much the end of their sanctuary with Amity, but it doesn't matter anyway, because before the…

Betsy-Tacy and Tib

In Betsy-Tacy we saw the friendship of Betsy and Tacy form little by little. And at the end we saw a new girl enter the plot, Tib. In this book, Betsy, Tacy and Tib are 9 years old, they love nothing more than to play together and, of course, get into trouble together, like only 9 year-old girls can. Some of the things they did in this book had me, and my two daughters (11 and 6) rolling with laughter. There was the time they went to play on the Big Hill and decided they were starving, so they made themselves as dirty as they could and went begging for food at the one house on the Hill. Unfortunately, Betsy's older sister Julia and Tacy's older sister Katie, showed up at the same house right before they were able to get their spoils. I've really enjoyed reading these classic books with my daughters. Luckily there are still another 8 to read. Highly recommend these ones!
