Soul Surfer

Bethany Hamilton was a normal 13 year-old girl. She loved to dress up and was planning to go out trick-or-treating for Halloween. She lived in Hawaii with her family and was a very competitive surfer. On Halloween, she and her best friend Alana were doing what they loved to do, surfing. They were relaxing on their boards just talking when the unthinkable happened. All of a sudden a shark came from out of nowhere and bit Bethany's arm off. She was so surprised and didn't really even feel pain when it happened. She calmly got herself to shore with the help of Alana and her father. Thus began her journey of learning to live with her disability. She is a good Christian girl, and she instinctively knew that Heavenly Father wouldn't give her any trials that she couldn't get through and that wouldn't be for her benefit in the long run. I LOVE the movie Soul Surfer, it's such a clean movie with an incredible story about Bethany and her family. I love how they talk abou…

Divine Deception

Falon has had a bit of bad luck. Her father died, and not very long after that, her grieving mother contracted consumption. Her mother could no longer take care of Falon, and she didn't want to have her take care of someone who could do nothing for themselves, so Falon's mother sent her to her Uncle Charles, thinking that he would care for her daughter as well as her father had. Unfortunately, Uncle Charles has a drinking problem, when he's drunk, he's mean. Falon has been his punching bag far too many times. One cold, dark, stormy night, Trader Donavon is out making his rounds. He stops by Uncle Charles' house to demand that the rent for the last few months be paid. Uncle Charles demands to have more time and sends Trader out into the storm, then he heads to bed. Falon is cold and trying to sleep in front of the fireplace when Trader comes back, because he's become lost in the storm. Falon gives up her place in front of the fire to him, so that he can be warme…

A Better Reason to Fall in Love

Tabby, Emmy, Jocelyn, and Naomi don't know that they are known as the "Foxy Four" at their office. Emmy has a boyfriend, Luke, a soldier currently deployed and getting close to being ably to come home to Emmy. Jocelyn is crushing on Armando, a cliff diver at their favorite restaurant, The Acapulco. Naomi hasn't met a guy that's worth crushing on yet. Tabby is totally crushing on the office hottie, Jagger Brodie, but doesn't feel that there's any way he would ever even look at her. The day Armando finally asks Jocelyn out, the girls see Jagger and some other office execs at The Acapulco and they realize that Jagger and Armando know each other. Not only that, English professor Anthony Lowery, who Emmy's boyfriend Luke knows, is a poet that Naomi happens to think is handsome. And the first man to pretty much make her crazy. I loved how this story kind of revolved around The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game. What girl didn't see Footloose and fall in l…

Hourglass

17 year-old Emerson Cole sees things that no one else can. Like the Scarlett O'Hara look-a-like standing in front of her front door as she tries to enter. It was for this reason that she was committed to a mental hospital and put on medication. The medication helped to get rid of the visions, but it made her feel as though she wasn't herself. Now she's living with her brother Thomas and his wife Dru, and she's stopped taking her meds, but they don't know that. Thomas has tried a series of things to help Emerson, but each was just more crazy than the last. The latest one being Hourglass. Emerson isn't quite sure just what that one will be, but she doesn't have much hope for it. Then she meets Michael. Michael who doesn't think she's crazy or broken for seeing visions, and he can even see them himself. Not to mention he's really hot and he and Emerson just have this...chemistry. But can she trust him enough to do what they will need to do together…

Sweet Cherry Ray

Cherry is a romantic young lady, she likes to read her Oklahoma Jenny books and dream about falling in love with a hero of her own. She lives in a small town, Blue Water, where everybody knows everybody, including the town outlaw, Black Jack Haley and his gang. Cherry's pa is retired Texas Ranger Arthur Ray. His wife was shot when Cherry was just a baby by an outlaw. Arthur can't stand the thought of one of the town outlaws wanting to harm Cherry, so he dresses her up as a young boy, except that's not working as well as he would hope. One day, as Cherry is standing in the street with her father, a stranger comes riding into town. He carries a gun, so the assumption of the towns people is that he's an outlaw looking to either join up with Black Jack or start his own gang. The stranger is handsome, and Cherry can't get her mind off of him. She just has to know whether he's an outlaw or not. So she spies on him, which he catches her at, several times. Each time he…

Variant

Benson Fisher is excited. He's earned a scholarship to Maxfield Academy in New Mexico. It's his first really lucky break. He's a foster kid, and he's been through a lot of families. He has no family to speak of, and even fewer friends because he's moved around so much. Now he's hoping to make a few friends and finish school at Maxfield. He figures out that there's something really strange about the Academy right away. It is surrounded by a gate with razor wire on the top. There's no adults there, the kids do everything themselves, including teaching and enforcing the rules. The kids are also pretty strange, for the most part they seem resigned to staying in the Academy. There are also gangs that run the school. Everyone belongs to one of three gangs. There's the Society, preppy kids, Havoc, which seems kind of like a regular gang, and Variant, which everyone else belongs to. Not really sure of which group to join, Benson joins Variant, because the k…

The Next Door Boys

Leigh is getting pretty tired of all the labels she has that follow her around. Jaron's little sister, the girl who sews, the girl who sings, and worst of all the girl who has cancer. Now, just a few months after her cancer had been diagnosed as being in remission, she just wants to go away and start over. Maybe going to BYU will do that for her, but then again, maybe not. She will still be labeled as Jaron's little sister, because he will be living right next door, and looking in on her a ton, because her parents set a bunch of rules about that. He also has to drive her to school every day. Leigh would rather be a bit more independent, but she knows that she needs to follow her parent's rules for her own health and well being. Her parents would rather she waited a bit to go to school, but it's time for Leigh to be on her own a little bit. Unfortunately, Leigh's body isn't quite as ready for the stress of college as she had hoped it would be. She's frustrat…

Beautiful Chaos

Ethan Wate just hasn't been the same since he died over the summer. Sure his girlfriend Lena and Amma brought him back from the dead, but things just weren't the same. The things that he used to love like chocolate milk and Amma's cooking just don't taste the same. Things that he used to hate like school cafeteria food do taste good. Luckily Lena's the same, except that it's hard for Ethan to touch her now, it sort of feels like he's going to die. He's not sure just what's going on with him, and it doesn't help when he starts forgetting things that he's known all his life. But Ethan can't really take the time to worry about himself right now. The whole town of Gatlin is suffering from a huge heat wave that has no end in sight, and it's full of Lubbers, crickets that are eating everything in sight. Ethan and Lena are pretty sure that the natural disasters going on are a result of Lena's breaking the order of things when she claime…

The Wedding Letters

This book is the sequel to The Wednesday Letters, which is an amazing book. This book starts out with Noah, who is Rain and Malcolm's son. He's driving his truck happily along a road when all of a sudden a big, fat squirrel runs out into the road in front of him. He makes an unsuccessful effort to avoid the squirrel and in the process hits a girl riding her bike on a trail. The girl, Rachel, is hurt and Noah calls an ambulance for her, and then takes her bike to the hospital and insists on staying with her to make sure that she's okay. Thus begins their romance. But no romance is without it's ups and downs, just as life isn't without it's ups and downs. Noah and Rachel will have their own ups and downs brought about by secrets that they didn't even know existed. Rain and Malcolm are not without their own trials. Malcolm's brother Matthew has been doing the money investing for their Inn for years. He's made some bad investments recently and he very n…

The Kissing Tree

13 year old Georgie had a mostly great life. She lives in a small town in Colorado with her family, except her father who had died when she was just 12. Georgie's two best friends are Samantha (Sammy) and Ridge. Sammy dares Georgie to steal a kiss from Ridge under the kissing tree, the old oak tree near town. Georgie's not quite certain if she has the courage to do it or not, but surprises herself by doing it, and then she hurries away. Georgie's mother is taking the family, Georgie and her two brothers, to visit her sister Cecilia in New York, but what Georgie doesn't know is that her mother, no longer able to bear the memories of her dead husband is not planning on ever coming back to Colorado. 5 long years later, Georgie returns to help her grandfather on his farm after her grandmother had died. She's so happy to be back, she had thought maybe the family would visit her grandparents sometime, but her grandmother died first. She's so happy to be back in her h…

Farmer Boy

It's been a while since I posted a book that I've read with our 5 year-old. That's because we've been reading this book, and having a hard time getting through it, because our schedule has changed and we don't have a set time where we sit down together to read anymore. It also doesn't help that she reads to herself now. I know it's a good thing that she's growing up, but sometimes it's hard too! We finished this book the other day. This is our 11 year-old's very favorite book in this series, I'd have to say it's probably mine too, but our 5 year-old can't wait to get back to the books about Laura and Mary. This book is part of the classic Little House series of books. They are written for elementary age kids. They are set in the 1800's before all of today's technology when kids played without any electronics at all! Almonzo is almost 9 as this book opens, he and his brother Royal and sisters Eliza Jane and Alice walk through …

Not My Type

Pepper Spicer is 23 years old, she works as a manager at a sandwich shop, managing high school students and of course dealing with cleaning up after all of their friends when they trash the shop. She's had a hard year, breaking of her engagement just a week before the wedding, for the second time and all. Now she's just working and trying to pay off the bills from the second almost wedding. But she's had a bad day, it happens to be her birthday and when her little sister picks the one kind of cake that she hates (chocolate?!!) for her birthday cake she just snaps. She ends up tipping the whole cake onto the floor. Her parents decide that she needs an attitude makeover and a job that actually uses her English degree from BYU, so they issue her a little challenge. She needs to write a thank you note to someone every week, and find a real job, or she has to move out of their house. But things are not always easy. Pepper decides to follow her dream of being a journalist at the…

Enduring Light

This is Carla Kelly's sequel to Borrowed Light that I read back in  May. Carla Kelly's books are amazing, just a couple of weeks ago I read Marian's Christmas Wish for my Christmas week and loved it. If you are a fan of clean romance you will love Carla Kelly's books! This book starts where Borrowed Light left off, so if you haven't read that book, you may spoil the ending by reading this review. Julia Darling is having a hard time getting over the fire that she lived through on the Double Tipi the previous summer. She is still having nightmares about the time that she spent under the cut bank in the river with the fire all around her, and she's having to deal with the scars all over her body. She's unsure if Paul Otto, her fiance is still going to want to marry her now that she's scarred. She doesn't even want to cook! She decides that she needs to send a letter to Paul and let him know of her scarred body and that her hair that was all singed off …
