Tiger's Voyage

This is the third book in the Tiger's Curse series and I am extremely grateful that it isn't the last book! These only make sense in order, so make sure that you read them in order. Kelsey knows that she needs to go on a couple more adventures with her tigers so that they can be men for a full day. Things are hard for her, because Ren still doesn't remember who she is and that he loves her. Kishan is also in love with her and her growing feelings for him make her very confused. How can she love both brothers at the same time? They take a trip deep into the jungle to talk to Phet about Ren's memory and his apparent PTSD that he's had ever since he was Lokesh's prisoner. Phet is able to cure his PTSD, but informs Kelsey that he's unable to fix the memory problem, because Ren is causing that himself. He also leaves Kelsey with the advice that either of the tigers will make her happy during her life. She just needs to pick one. But how does she decide between t…

Journey of Honor

This book is set in the 1840's. Trace is a doctor living in the south with his father and adopted brother Mose. Mose is a black man who at one time was a slave, but was adopted by Trace's family as a child. Trace is disgusted with slavery and determines that he can't live in his hometown anymore, so he won't have to see the black people mistreated anymore. He takes Mose and they head west, where color doesn't matter quite as much. They work as teamsters freighting goods across from the east to the west. On their fourth trip he sees the most beautiful girl he has ever seen and then it's his fortune or misfortune, depending on your point of view, to have her family join their wagon train heading west. He finds out that he name is Giselle and she's traveling west with her grandparents. It ends up safer for Giselle to cross the plains as Trace's wife so they get married, but their's is a marriage in name alone. The intend to have the marriage annulled a…

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

I have to admit that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was one of my very favorite movies as a child. One day a few weeks ago, when I was at the library with my two kids, my older daughter came across this book. She wanted to read it because she also likes the movie, and I decided that I would also read it. The Pott family are a little unconventional. The father Caractacus is an inventor and adventurer. His children Jeremy and Jemima and his wife Mimsy, are also adventurers, and they enjoy the inventions that he makes. One of these inventions is a candy that can make flute noises as you are eating it. The family has previously been quite poor, but are able to sell the sweets and are given enough money to buy their first car. This isn't just any car, it's a famous race car, but it was in an accident and needs quite a lot of work. When Caractacus is finished, there are a good many of his newest inventions included, which will bring the family a lot of new adventures. I really enjoyed read…

Marian's Christmas Wish

Marian Wynswich is determined to have a wonderful Christmas, because they pretty much missed Christmas the year before. Her father died unexpectedly on Christmas Eve the year before and the whole family was plunged into mourning. Unfortunately, Marian's older brother Percy is coming home, which is wonderful, but he's bringing a wealthy man to have her older sister Ariadne marry, because with their father dead the Wynswich family is getting closer and closer to being destitute. Ariadne happens to be in love with the reverend of their church and Marian doesn't want to see her sister sold to a man that she doesn't nor will ever love. When Percy arrives, not only has he brought Ariadne's suitor, but he's also brought Lord Ingraham , who very soon becomes the 16 year-old Marian's confidant and co-conspirator in ridding the estate of Ariadne's suitor, so that the reverend and Ariadne can marry and be happy. Things don't always go as planned for Marian tho…

A Lancaster County Christmas

This is a book that I won from a book hop a few weeks ago, it makes a great addition to my Christmas week books! Mattie and her husband Sol are Amish, as such they live a very plain lifestyle. Mattie had a miscarriage not very long ago, and she needs to visit her doctor to make sure everything is alright with her recovery. While sitting in the waiting room, she sees a woman, an English woman, that's how the book talks about those who are not Amish. The woman, Jamie, listens to Mattie's son Danny as he talks to her about all kinds of things. She even seems interested in his owl whistle that Sol made for him. Mattie and her family don't really think another thing about the woman in the doctor's office. Jamie wouldn't have thought another thing about the Amish family either, except Danny left his owl whistle in the doctor's office and the doctor asks Jamie to return it on her way home. Jamie doesn't really want to, she and her husband CJ are going to be leavin…

A Dog Named Christmas

This book was made into a Hallmark Hall of Fame movie on TV a couple of Christmas' ago. I only got to see about half for some reason, but I can't remember why. Anyway, while getting ready for our family vacation in August I ran across a copy of this book for just a couple of dollars. I had to buy it for our daughter, who loves dogs as long as they aren't really anywhere near her, but I also bought it so that I could read it and find out how the story ended! Todd is a developmentally challenged young man, he lives with his parents on their farm in Kansas. He's always wanted a dog and just before Christmas he hears on ad on the radio for the town animal shelter. It seems the animal shelter wants the dogs to be able to have a good Christmas as well as the humans in the town, so why not have people adopt the dogs, but just for the week of Christmas. They can return the dogs after Christmas. Todd thinks this is a wonderful idea, but his dad has been scarred by the times tha…

In the Valley of the Mountains

This is the final book of the Shadows of Brierley series and I would have to say that it was my favorite of the four books. Gillian is Wren and Ian's oldest daughter. She's old enough that she has two younger siblings already married. She's not sure exactly what her life will hold for her, but she's hoping that marriage to a wonderful man that she loves with the same kind of love that her parents share will be in it somewhere. Gillian has a wonderful gift, she has the gift of being able to sense the presence of spirits from beyond the veil and they are able to help her in ways that enrich her life and others around her. She's not exactly sure what to think when family friend Hugh asks her to go on a picnic with him, just the two of them, but she's thrown for a loop when he asks her to marry him. Hugh is twenty years older than she is and he was deeply in love with a woman who died in a tragic way years earlier. Hugh knows that he and Gillian could be happy, eve…

Rearview Mirror

I love the cover of this book, so mysterious! Just like the story. Fiona Claridge is just a normal college professor living in a small New England town. But she has a secret. When she was in college she was the driver in a terrible accident that killed her best friend, Mia and left her recovering from the trauma both mentally and physically. She's offended a student, Kimberly Bailey and when she starts getting packages and notes referring to Mia, she assumes that Kim is getting even with her for calling her on cheating on an essay. There is another possibility though, she runs into an ex-boyfriend who now has a wife, and the wife accuses her of cheating with her husband. Soon though, the packages stop and there's even more creepy, scary things happening to Fiona. She knows that she must be even more careful before someone gets hurt, or worse, killed. This book was amazingly creepy. I really enjoyed the mystery of who was after Fiona and why, I did not figure this one out befor…

Tuesdays at the Castle

Jessica Day George is my favorite author that re-writes fairy tales. This book was no exception. Just imagine a castle that changes, adds rooms and towers, lengthens hallways, sometimes even adding entire wings. That's what Castle Glower does, mostly on Tuesdays when it gets bored listening to the goings on in King Glower's throne room. Princess Celie, the youngest daughter of King Glower is constantly trying to map the castle, including all of it's changes, she's the first to ever really try to do so. Her older brother Bran is graduating from the magician's college and her parents are going to his graduation and will be gone for several weeks, Celie would love to go, but her father has firmly told her no. So she has to be content to stay home and sketch her map. One day, while staying in the new tower the castle has provided, complete with telescopes that can see a very long ways away, Celie notices her parent's carriage coming much faster than it should have …

Here's another regency romance for you. Ellen and her sister Mimi are not close, their mother had wanted them to be close and she also had wanted them to love Jane Austen books, unfortunately neither of them really did. When their mom dies of cancer she asks them to go to England and take a Jane Austen tour and decide together where to scatter her ashes. Together...that might be the problem. Their mother also left them a package with a mysterious antique in it. When Ellen opens it she finds Cassandra Austen's diary, it appears to be old and authentic, but Ellen's unsure if it really is or not. She's not sure just what to do with it, or about it, especially when she realizes that the boy she was in love with in college, Daniel, is there at her mother's request to help them with the journal. Soon there becomes too many people for Ellen to avoid, Daniel, she's still not sure how she feels about him, Mrs. Parrot, she seems to know all of Ellen's secrets, Mimi, …

The Duke of Kielder is in a bit of a bind, he has never married and the heir apparent of his estate is a man that he can't stand. His solicitor recommends marrying a young woman with no fortune and no prospects of suitors because of her family's situation. Enter Persephone Lancaster, a 20 year old pretty young woman, who has no fortune. Her family loves her, but she's served as the mother of the family since she was 12. She determines to basically sell herself in marriage to the Duke so that her younger sisters will have the opportunity to marry whoever they desire when they are of age. Escape From Zarahemla

This is the sequel to Passage To Zarahemla, a while ago, just out of curiosity I looked up just how long ago, the original was written in 2003. Kerra and her brother Brock are taking missionary discussions and trying to determine how they feel about the Church. Their home life isn't normal and hasn't been for a long time due to their parent's divorce and their father disappearing for several years. Their father has been back just 6 months, but he hasn't been the dad that they knew before he left, and he's not giving them any explanation as to why. Kerra and Brock are having a missionary discussion when he bursts into their small St. George apartment and tells them that they need to go to their aunt and uncle's home. When they arrive they are told that there is a Nephite hidden in the hollow, where the time rift from before is. This Nephite recognizes their father and gives him a message about the destruction of his family, Kerra and Brock are perplexed, because…

Hang "Em High

It's been a boring six months for elderly sleuths Ida Mae, Tansy, and Arlette. They were released from their callings in their ward for participating in espionage activities a few years previously, when they were solving one of their mysteries.  So when Ida Mae gets a letter from her estranged son Keith, who owns a dude ranch in Montana, she and her friends jump at the chance to spend a little time their, even though it's the dead of winter and Montana isn't the warmest place in the winter. They plan their trip and take off, making the trip in one day, because of a winter storm moving into Montana. Little do they know the adventure that awaits them on Keith's ranch. They are only there on night when disaster strikes. One of Keith's prize stud horses is found dead in the barn of an apparent poisoning by rat poison. The person responsible for taking care of the horse is moved to a different position, but the damage is already done. When a second horse is found poison…

Love on the Line

Deanne Gist is one of the best Christian romance authors around. Her books are always clean, fun, historically accurate and romantic and this book was no different! Georgie Gail is a telephone switchboard operator in rural Texas. She likes to bird watch and she's built a wonderful backyard garden for just such a purpose. Unfortunately, the lady's fashion at the time is to have parts of dead birds on their clothes and hats. When the local milliner has a contest to see who can bring him the most bird parts she knows she's in trouble! She's also survived a train robbery by the great Frank Comer. Now she thinks that he's a wonderful man and that his great rival of the Texas Rangers, Lucious Landrum is kind of a jerk. Being that they are thrown together a lot, Luke and Georgie start to fall in love. They must overcome her love of …

Carving Angels

I read this book last night in about an hour. It's only 115 pages of bigish type. This is a story about Santa's elves, 2 in particular. Papa Adam is a very old elf who can no longer see, he hasn't carved any toys for Santa in a very long time. This has caused him to feel as though life is passing him by, and that he's no longer important. One day his youngest granddaughter, 5 year old Amy, comes to visit him. She brings him a block of wood, tells him it's very beautiful, and demands that he carve her a toy like he's carved toys for all of the other grand-kids. Papa Adam doesn't feel that he can still carve with his eyesight gone, but he decides that it really can't hurt anything to get his tools out and give it a try. So he does and he's amazed that he's able to carve a beautiful angel for Amy, including details, and he's also amazed at how much purpose one simple project brings to his life. Amy begins bringing him wood to carve on a regular…

Lost December

This is the newest book by Richard Paul Evans. I enjoy reading his books, I love that they usually have a spiritual message and this book was no exception. Luke Crisp is the son of millionaire Carl Crisp who founded Crisp's copy centers. He was completely happy managing a group of stores but his father thought that he should get his MBA from an ivy league school. So Luke, who had always had a great relationship with his father, decided to head to Wharton. There he met Candace, a beautiful girl that Luke can see himself married to. Unfortunately his relationship with his father suffers as he makes new friends and Luke decides that he needs to go on a spending spree with his trust fund money, which disappears faster than he ever thinks possible and his friends also disappear just as fast as the money when they realize that it's gone. Luke is on his own and broke, unsure of what to do next. But one thing is certain to him, he can't go home to his father. I really enjoyed this…

Hereafter

I had a bit of a hard time really getting into this book, but when I did, I was amazed at how much I really did like it. Amelia is a ghost. She has the same nightmare over and over, the nightmare of the way she died in the river under High Bridge, but she doesn't remember how she got into the river or really anything about her human life, especially why she spends her afterlife wandering around in a fancy white dress. After her nightmare she wakes up in a cemetery, she assumes it's where she's buried, but she never stays long enough to look around and find out. One night she has the nightmare, or she thinks she has the nightmare, but there's one difference. She's not drowning this time, a boy is. She wishes there was a way to help him, but being a ghost, she can't really shove him back out of the water. She's forced to watch as his heart beats louder and louder, signalling his impending death, but as soon as he dies, his heart is able to restart itself. The…

How to Save a Life

Mandy is a young unwed pregnant mother who just wants to give her baby a loving mother, something she's never had. Jill is the 17 year-old daughter of Robin, the woman who wants to adopt Mandy's baby. Her father has just died and she really can't see how Mandy's baby will replace him in their lives. She doesn't feel as though her mom has really thought this decision through. She's not very nice to Mandy. Mandy has her own secrets about who the baby's father is, when she's due and how she's taken care of herself during the pregnancy. This book is by Utah author Sara Zarr, I read another of her books, Once Was Lost, earlier this year. I expected to like this book, but I had a really hard time getting into the story. I understood why Mandy was not telling Robin the whole truth, but I didn't necessarily like her decisions to lie. I didn't like Jill, her attitude or her language. At the beginning of the book it wasn't too bad, but within 100 …

Hunted

Clair Poulson is one of my very favorite suspense authors! He also adds just a bit of romance into his books. This book is about Zach, he's a young returned missionary. He decides that he wants to go on a hunt in the mountains of Utah during Hunting Season, but he wants to go with his friends. He invites a mixture of friends from his hometown, including Bria  Phillips whose father has just died in a boating accident, and then is approached by Caden Pendleton who begs to be able to go on the hunt also. Zach agrees reluctantly and with good reason. Caden is a pain on the hunt, he's lazy and rude and he creeps all the girls out with the way that he looks at them. The last straw is when Caden loses one of Zach's family's horses that happens to have one of the hunter's prize buck on it. While everyone is out looking for the horse, Caden is shot by someone with Bria's shotgun, but no one's quite sure who did it. And Bria disappears around the same time. No one…

The Best of Me

Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole were in love when they were in high school. The only problem was that Dawson was a Cole and Amanda was a Collier. Dawson's family was the kind of family always in trouble with the law for something. And Dawson never felt as though he fit in with them. He eventually moved out and lived in the garage of Tuck, he ran an auto business and he allowed Dawson to live there and took care of him when his family came calling and took all of the money that Dawson was making from his part time job. Dawson was a pretty good kid, no matter what Amanda's parents thought of him, but he had the bad luck to kill a man in an auto accident and get sent to jail for it, when it wasn't necessarily his fault. Dawson was able to get his life together. He lives in New Orleans and works on an oil rig in the ocean. He's been in several accidents on the rig, but never any like the one that almost took his life. It was an explosion that knocked him and all the other m…

The Alias

I read this book, because I found it on a list of Whitney award nominees, and let me just say that this book deserves a Whitney award, I thought that it was amazing! Jacey Grayson is a single mother, she's living in Detroit with her son Blaze. They are living with her best friend Melissa and her daughter Jenny. She's doing what a lot of single mothers do, just making it, working at a diner as a waitress. One day she's contacted by the FBI about her husband, they seem to think that her ex-husband is a drug dealer and also a murderer and that Jacey knows something about his activities, but she's really clueless about him. When she and Melissa talk about it later, they both decide that it would be far too easy for Jacey's ex-husband John to track them down at Melissa's house, so they decide that Jacey needs to go stay with Melissa's estranged relatives on their ranch in Utah. But she's not going as Jacey, she's going as Melissa. This shouldn't be a…

Minor Adjustments

Rachael Renee Anderson is one of my very favorite authors. Her other books Divinely Designed and Luck of the Draw are hilarious just plain fun reads. I would have to include this book in that category also. Devon Pierce is a bachelor, he lives in Chicago, and he runs his own business, which is a very busy kind of life. He can't be a 4 year-old boy's father. But that's exactly what he's about to become. You see, when she was 13 years-old, Lindsay lived with Devon's family for the school year. Devon's family became kind of the ideal family for Lindsay, so fast forward 10 years, she discovers that she's dying and as her last act she leaves her 4 year-old son Ryan to Devon. Now it's up to her Solicitor Stella to convince Devon that it's in Ryan's best interest to live with him, even though it's breaking Stella's heart to have Ryan so far away from her. The first step is to get Devon to try it out for just a couple of weeks, so that he can fa…

The Royal Treatment

The Royal Treatment is the second in the Princess for Hire series. I think that it's pretty hilarious that these books are set in a small town in Idaho. That's where I grew up, although, I've never heard of Sproutville, so I'm not sure if it's a real place or not. In this book Desi has started 8th grade, things are going at least OK for her and she's getting ready to try out for her school play, which happens to be Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. And of course, she's trying to complete her BEST (Betterment of Elite Sub Training) for Facade. Her BEST is to help her be more able to handle a specific more cultured princess, it's what a Level 2 sub must do for every new princess that they are going to sub for. Desi's just waiting to finish her BEST for her first job as a Level 2, but she's having a hard time finishing her musical, and speaking requirements. Just as she finishes her magical tryout for her school play, she discovers f…

Blog Tour - Hope's Journey

Today we have a blog tour. Hope's Journey was written by Stephanie Worlton. I was given a digital copy in exchange for a unbiased review.

Meet Sydney, she's a 17 year old senior in high school. She has a group of friends that she hangs out with, mostly guys. She's always felt more comfortable with them. She's not sure that she always understands the girly girls. And then there's Alex, her very awesome boyfriend. Alex and Sydney are very much in love, in fact, they seem to be perfect for each other. They are getting ready for graduation and for the life that will come for both of them after graduation, Sydney at college in San Francisco and Alex on a mission where ever he's sent to. Unfortunately the discovery that Sydney is pregnant changes those plans for both of them. Sydney is not going to be in any condition to go to school for a little while and a mission is definitely out for Alex at this point. But will this trial bring them closer together or push them …

Princess for Hire

Funny thing about this book, I actually started reading the second book in the series first, I'll talk about that one in just a few days, but I decided that it would be smart to read them in order, so I got this one from the library really quick and stopped reading the other book. Desi is just a normal, everyday girl. She will be going into the 8th grade soon, she has a job at the pet shop at the mall, and she has some ex-best friends that are now enemies. She's working at the pet shop one day, dressed in a great big gopher head, when she sees her crush Hayden flirting with her ex-best friend Celeste. This is terrible enough, but then Hayden and Celeste come over to where she is standing and Celeste figures out that it's Desi under the head and unmasks her in a most embarrassing way. Desi's not sure why, but she seems to be invisible, almost like...vapor. She is pretty depressed and not sure what to do, so she makes a wish on some fish and the next thing she knows ther…

Jayda, also known as Jane in her small town of Blackbird Hill, is returning after 16 long years. They also need to save the home from the developers who want to turn the whole thing into one of those developments that you always hear about that will kill the wonderful small town. Unfortunately, Jayda has no idea how to go about this. But with her dog, Tarzan, she's going to try to figure it out. She knows that she will need a lot more help than just her trusty dog, however, she knows that she will need to enlist the help of all the willing townspeople, but she needs to figure out just who's willing first. Monster Mash and Bash Book Giveaway and Janitors

Today we have a blog hop, so fun! I am going to be giving away a signed ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) of the Janitors by Tyler Whitesides, it's brand new, as far as I know never been opened except to be signed. I thought that it would maybe be a good idea to read it first. So, I pulled out the hardback copy that we were able to also get signed. This is one of our 11 year-old's very favorite books right now, she's read it twice just since we won it in  September. Spencer is just a normal 6th grader. He goes to school and is bullied by the class bully and he goes home and tries to clean the home that they are living in (he's a bit of a neat freak, and his family is definitely not!) Right now his family is living in his Aunt Avril's house in the wealthy subdivision of a small town in southern Idaho. They live there, because Spencer's dad left them to work on a job and he never came back. One particularly disastrous day, school is going along as normal when Spencer f…

My Girlfriend's Boyfriend

I wasn't so sure about this book, it has kind of a goofy title for one thing. For another thing it's based on a movie, which doesn't seem like it would be a wonderful thing, especially considering I've never even heard of the movie. But, it did have one good thing going for it, it's written by Elodia Strain. I've loved both of the books that I've read that were written by her (The Icing on the Cake, and Previously Engaged.) They were both hilarious, if you haven't read them you should! Anyway on to the review! You first meet Ethan in this book, he's a writer, currently working on screenplays, but none of them are really working for the movie people. Next we meet Jesse, and the whole rest of the book is from her perspective. Jesse is 31 years old, divorced and she works in a little coffee shop. Her boss, Magda, is trying to get her to date more, so she comes up with all of these crazy rules about what Jesse can wear, and how to treat the male custome…

Supernaturally

Evie is all settled in as a normal girl in school. She's chosen to use the last name of Green, Lend's dad, David, is her guardian and she lives with Arianna above the diner where she coincidentally works. She loves school, especially having a locker, except for PE, Evie is not really a sports girl and the teacher is kind of a beast. Her best human girl friend, Carlee, tries to help, but sometimes that makes things worse for Evie. As she's lying on the grass trying to recover from the beating she took during the PE soccer match, Evie notices a strange cloud that seems to have lightning bolts shooting in it. She thinks it's kind of odd, but doesn't have time to worry about it before her next class. Only she doesn't get to stay for all of her next class, she's called to the office to be checked out by her "aunt." Her aunt turns out to be Raquel, her old boss and the closest thing to a mother Evie has ever known, Raquel has known that Evie's alive…

Little House on the Prairie

Laura's family is moving from their house in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, it's gotten too crowded in the Big Woods. Pa sells their home, they pack up what they can take in the wagon and leave what they can't in their house, pile into the wagon and the little family of five is off on a grand adventure into the Indian country of Kansas. There they will build a new life, starting with a new house. They love their new home on the prairie, but of course things aren't always wonderful. There are Indians, scary animals, diseases and lots of mosquitoes. I love these childhood classics. I just finished reading this book with our 5 year-old. She is just loving reading about "Mary and Laura." These books are so fun to read with or to have children read. They are taught about life in pioneer times without our modern conveniences of cars, video games, indoor plumbing etc.

Before I Say Goodbye

Rikki Crockett has come home to Spanish Fork, Utah after a very long absence, she ran away from her hometown 20 years ago when her then boyfriend, Dante, went on a mission and she hasn't been back since. Part of that was her abusive father. Now she's returned, partially because her father has since died and left her the home that she grew up in and part of that is that she needs to find a future for her 2 children, 13 year old Kyle and 7 year old James. As she attends her LDS ward for the first time in a very long time, she realizes that things have changed. She's forgotten how modestly they dress and also the Bishop of her ward is none other than Dante. Dante is not quite sure what to think of Rikki's appearance, he's very much in love with his wife Becca and their 4 children, even as he's very busy being the Bishop of his childhood ward. Becca's just confused. She instinctively knows that Rikki meant a lot to Dante, but it's obvious that neither of th…

Obsession

The last few of Traci Hunter Abramson's books have focused on the Saint Squad, this one is a totally new story. Kendra is a popular pop singer, her dad is an actor, so Kendra's used to being in the spotlight and used to having the security to go with the spotlight. She's finally out on her own, mostly, her dad still insists on her using one of his security people as a guard. She's almost finished with her latest tour, only two shows to go, when a bomb explodes at her concert. She's really not sure what happened or why, but she does know that she doesn't want her dad to overreact and send her more security guards, which is exactly what he tries to do. Kendra calls her grandfather, a former FBI agent, asking for his protection. He offers to help and sets her up with a cabin in the mountains and an undercover FBI agent living right across the street. She doesn't know that Charlie is and FBI agent, they seem to have a lot in common, they're both LDS and the…

The Son of Neptune

This is the second book in Rick Riordan's popular Heroes of Olympus series. This whole series follows the Percy Jackson series and if you haven't read that series you definitely should! Book one of the Heroes of Olympus series is told from the point of view of Jason, while this book is told from the point of view of Percy. Percy has lost his memory, he isn't sure why monsters keep chasing him to try to kill him. He really isn't sure why after he kills the monsters they reform and try to kill him again. He isn't sure why, but he feels like he really needs to be in San Francisco, maybe it's because he is more powerful in the water. He arrives at a camp in San Francisco for half-bloods, but it doesn't feel familiar to him at all. Percy only remembers one thing from his past life, Annabeth. He knows that she's his girlfriend, but he has no idea where she is or how to find her. At Camp Jupiter Percy makes some new friends, Hazel and Frank. They both have the…

The Wednesday Letters

Jason F Wright is one of my favorite authors and with the release of The Wedding Letters, I knew that I needed to re-read The Wednesday Letters so the sequel would make sense! Jack and Laurel Cooper run a quiet little bed and breakfast in the Shenandoah valley. They have 3 kids Matthew, Samantha and Malcom. Jack is fighting a losing battle with brain cancer and Laurel is taking care of him and all the needs of their B&B and worrying about all their kids, especially Malcom, their youngest. One night after a grueling day Laurel gets into bed next to Jack and before either of them realizes what's really happening she dies. Jack, thinking he was going to be the one to go first, gets out of bed and writes a letter that he tucks into the Bible with a few others before he too gets into bed and dies with Laurel, his arms around her. This all happens in the very first chapter and the rest of the book deals with how those that knew them best take the news that this wonderful and loved c…

The Hainan Incident

Yi Jichun (Jason in English) is an American attorney, he does have Chinese ancestry so that makes him an ideal choice for him to be an undercover agent in China. He's supposed to be uncovering corruption in the Chinese court system and decides to take a little trip to Hainan Island. He's having a great time playing tourist when he runs across an oddity, a computer with a strange symbol in a hut in a cultural village where you wouldn't imagine a computer would be kept. What really shakes him up is when the expensive camera that he took a shot of the computer with disappears from his hotel room right after he's taken it. He flies home as scheduled, minus camera, but his flight is really late and he really doesn't want to wait for it. So he books a flight to a slightly different destination and is floored the next morning when the news reports that his original flight had crashed in route. I didn't not like this book, but I was kind of confused by it, especially i…

He's not sure what to do about Ashley, but he tries to be as supportive as he can for his mom and to sort of get along with his uncle. One morning he's walking to school past Bat Lady's house when she appears at the door and yells at him to tell him that his dad is still alive. Bat Lady is the crazy old lady of the town. Mickey is really confused by this, since he was with his dad when he died so he tries to get her to answer her door and explain what she meant by that comment, but the door goes unanswered. Mickey is confused about that comment, but knows that life must go on and he really feels that he needs to find out what happened to Ashley, especially when there's no trace of her at the people who are supposed to be her parents house and her mom…

Garden Plot

Erin Kilpatrick runs a rehab center for those people who have struggled with substance abuse. The center is in an old convent and she and her daughter Jennie live in a home on the same property. One morning as she's on her way from home to the center she stumbles across a body in her garden. It appears to be on of the guests of the center. Pretty soon the police are over running both her garden and the rehab center searching for clues as to who could have killed this guest and dumped them into Erin's bean plants. A Distant Shore

This is the 3rd book in the Shadows of Brierley series by Anita Stansfield. The series is set in the 1840's, and this book is set mostly in Nauvoo, Illinois. I haven't always loved this series, the other 2 books have kind of seemed like the plot line was almost exactly the same. I thought that this book was a little better that way. Ian and Wren Brierley are living in Nauvoo. They are enjoying living in the shadow of the Nauvoo Temple as it's being built and also living near the Prophet Joseph Smith. They also love living in the same house as their friends Ward and Patricia. Wren is expecting their 3rd child any day when Brother Joseph comes to visit to extend a call to Ian and Ward to serve a mission in their homeland. Neither Ian or Ward is thrilled with the idea of being away from their families for so long, but both come to know that it is the Lord's will for their lives and they come to be excited for the opportunity to teach in England and Scotland. Ian is excite…

The Peasant Queen

I've been waiting a really long time for the library to get a copy of this book, I was so happy to finally be able to read it. Imagine how you would feel to be Krystal, her father is dead, her mother is blind so Krystal has to take care of her, and her 3 brothers see her as a cook. One day she finds out that her brother Andrew has determined that she will marry a boy from the village without her consent. The boy seems to only care that she is pretty and he refuses to allow her to keep reading after they are married. Krystal tries to get Andrew to see things her way, but he refuses and she decides she needs to get away for a while. She puts on pants and heads into the forest with her dog Damen, but someone is following her and she finds herself captured by strangers. She is brought by very strange means to a very strange and different land where it's king, Gregory, pronounces her a princess and tries to keep her in that life. He also demands that she marry him. She hears rumors…

Uncommon Criminals

I was very afraid of reading this book, it's a young adult book written by a New York Times bestselling author, usually those combinations mean lots of swear words that I really don't enjoy reading, but this book was a pleasant surprise. Katarina is a normal looking 15 year old girl, she might be a bit on the short side, but she fits in everywhere, at Russian parties and fancy museums. What those that see her don't know is that she is a thief, not just any thief. She steals artifacts that have already been stolen by whoever, Nazi's a lot of times, and returns them to their proper owners. She's just finished a job at the previously mentioned Russian party, she flies home and is met at the airport by her crush W.W. Hale, otherwise known as Hale. He's not happy with her because she keeps taking risks by doing all the jobs all on her own instead of asking for help from the other criminals. They are just about to get into the limo for their ride home when they are a…

The Last Little Blue Envelope

This book is a sequel to 13 Little Blue Envelopes. When last we saw Virginia, Ginny, she had just had her backpack and all her little blue envelopes from her aunt Peg stolen. She was devastated and she called her uncle Richard to pick her up. Then they found all of Aunt Peg's art and were able to sell it and make a tidy profit on it. Now Ginny is 18, she's applying to colleges and doesn't really know where her life is going. Her sorta boyfriend Keith from London is seeming distant. One day out of the blue she gets an e-mail from another Londoner named Oliver saying he's found her envelopes and basically offering to give them back, or so Ginny thinks. She figures out a way that she can return to England for the Christmas holiday. She'll stay with her uncle Richard, pay a visit to her sorta boyfriend Keith and get her letters from Oliver. But things don't always work out the way that you've planned. Keith has a new girlfriend, a girl that Ginny actually reall…

Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25

I've read an awful lot of Richard Paul Evans books, they're usually romance books and they're usually really good, but I have to say I really like this style of writing better for him. This is more of a fantasy, sci-fi type. There aren't a bunch of other kinds of creatures like in Fablehaven or Percy Jackson, it's the kids themselves that have powers. Michael Vey is not a normal high school student, he'd like to be normal, but he has a power. He can shock things, kind of like an eel. He even shocked his mother one time when she was bathing him as a 3 year-old. He's a lot smaller than the other kids in his grade, so he gets picked on a lot: things like being stuffed in his locker or garbage cans. He gets stuffed in his locker by the bullies of his high school and the principal gives him the month's worth of detention instead of the bullies. One day he's fed up with being beaten and these same bullies are trying to pants him, basically remove his pant…
